Walter "Nevin" Harmon, 93, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2015 at Sunny View Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 30, 2015 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut St. with burial to follow at Lincoln Township Cemetery near Alleman. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Ankeny Funeral Home.

Walter Nevin Harmon was born June 26, 1921 at home in Ankeny to Walter and Clare (Marts) Harmon. He grew up in Ankeny and received his education from Ankeny High School while helping on the family farm. Nevin was united in marriage to Bonita Harshbarger on November 21, 1942 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church in Ankeny where they were longtime members. The couple made their home on the farm they purchased and were blessed with two children, David and Debbra.

Nevin continued to grow the farm with several land purchases in northwest Ankeny. He worked part-time in 1957 for John Deere then taking a full-time position in the experimental department where he traveled often across the United States. Following retirement, Nevin would still help David around the farm during planting and harvest season.

He enjoyed collecting old John Deere tractors and taking care of the flower gardens. He also took many winter trips with Bonita to Arizona to spend time with Debbra. Most of all Nevin loved spending time with Bonita, his children, and grandchildren who all held a special place in his heart.

Survivors include his son, David (Charlene) Harmon of Ankeny; daughter, Debbra Flynn of Tempe, AZ; seven grandchildren, Sean (Melanie), Katie and Mike Harmon and Jordan (Megan) Flynn, Jenn (Lee) Carpenter, Angela (Carlos) Wakely, and Juliet Becker; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Bonita in 2012; parents; and two brothers, Herb Harmon and Bob Harmon.

Nevin's family would like to thank the Sunny View Care Center staff for the loving care given to both him and Bonita. They both loved visiting with the staff, residents, and visitors.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Ankeny Historic Society, 301 SW 3rd St. Ankeny, IA 50023.
